O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She was raised in Wheaton and was a student at Wheaton North School, graduating in 1981. She was a part of a couple of television commercials, before moving to Los Angeles. Her first assignment was to model for Montgomery Ward. She also featured in a variety of commercials. She began her career on screen in the romantic drama Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a prominent role as a recurring character in ABC Drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. Also, she guest starred in a variety of shows. She appeared in both the independent and TV-produced films. Donna Abandando, her first significant role in the ABC police comedy NYPD Blue was the character she played. O'Grady's role as the tall blonde team secretary in the series from 1993 until 1996. For each of those seasons, she was awarded an Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance in the Drama Series. In 1995, O'Grady was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Drama Series together with the ensemble.
