O'Neil she was in her high school year when she took part in the auditions, tried out in the 3rd season of Canadian Idol in the beginning of 2005. She made it to the top tier of contestants after the judges praised her voice. O'Neil was praised highly by her judges. She experienced significant defeats during the top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed into the bottom three and the bottom two spots, respectively. Judges were horrified by this and informed the crowd that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil's performance was so consistently good, that he did not fall into the bottom 3. With two other stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, as O'Neil and Rex Goudie made it to the final two competitors, the judge Werner reported that headlines in the morning papers would read O'Neil defeated Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the youngest champion in the show's history . O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
